WaheguroojikaKhalsaWaheguroojikiFateh!!
Veerji, all your questions can be answered by reading a rehat maryada on Karah-Parshaad. Or read a book Deg maryada. Below is from the writing of Bhai Nand Lal ji which is panth parvaanit and might help you understand... First line is in Gurmukhi & second in english

dsmI Awid gurU idn jyqy purb smwn khy hYN qyqy ]
dhasamee aadh guroo dhin jaethae purab samaan kehae hai(n) thaethae ||

kVwh krn kI ibiD sun lIjY qIn Bwg ko smsr kIjY ]

jo prasaadh ko baa(n)tt hai man mae dhhaarae lobh ||

sUAw pihr ley nsvwr goibMd isMG hoie su Kvwr ]

And for amit Singh veerji, NOOOO you can't compromise on ghee or serving size or anything as technically you can be tankhaiya if you go by rules :)

I think that it is Guru Sahib's bachan that you cannot go to narak after consuming degh for up to 40 days ...

that sounds like superstition...

follow rehet, do nitnem, do paath, do simran, be a good human being... narak should be the least of your worries.

for the original post...

degh means cooking vessel, like karhai. (degh, tegh, fateh = kitchen, sword, victory) it has come to mean the food which is cooked in the vessel, ie: kara prashad, but anything cooked in guru sahib's langar can be degh.

here's what bhai gurdas jee says about degh prashad:

gurisKw gurisK syvw lwieAw]
gurasikhaa gurasikh saevaa laaeiaa||
The Sikhs of the Guru inspire the Sikhs of the Guru to serve.

swD sMgiq kir syv suK Plu pwieAw]
saadhh sa(n)gath kar saev sukh fal paaeiaa||
Serving the Holy Congregation they receive the fruit of happiness.

qpVu JwiV ivCwie DUVI nwieAw]
thaparr jhaarr vishhaae dhhoorree naaeiaa||
Sweeping and spreading the sitting mats they bathe in the dust of the Holy Congregation.

kory mt Axwie nIru BrwieAw]
korae matt anaae neer bharaaeiaa||
They bring unused pitchers and fill them with water (to get it cold).

Awix mhw prswdu vMif KuAwieAw ]10]
aan mehaa parasaadh va(n)dd khuaaeiaa ||10||
They bring sacred food (maha parshad), distribute it among others and eat.(10)

maha prashad = kara prashad = degh. :)

kara prashad must be made according to maryada (three ingredients in equal quantities), cooked by an amritdhari gursikh, with simran or bani recited while it's prepared. it becomes prashad when we do ardaas and bless it with guru sahib's kirpaan.
